Emissions Corner

Repowering Old Machines, Responsibly
T
oday, everyone is trying to be green—environmentally responsible, that is.
For contractors, most agree that curtailing harmful emissions from their off-road equipment is worthwhile. Black smoke belching from yellow iron is no longer considered a sign of success. But being green can be tough.
Since 1994, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has been pushing programs to reduce the emission of particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen from off-road diesels, including those used in construction.
In an ideal world, contractors could toss out (in an environmentally favorable way, of course) all of their old machines and buy new ones with Tier 1 or better compliant diesel engines. But listen here sunshine, that’s not how it works. Replacing an entire fleet of big iron in this economy is unreasonable. Plus, most contractors have older machines with years of productivity left in them. Diesel engines are designed to last.
As a solution to the predicament, the Kansas Dept of Health and Environment (KDHE) competed and won four million dollars worth of stimulus money to be used in part for construction equipment upgrades and engine replacements. The money is part of the stimulus funding which is funding the reduction of diesel emissions through the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA).

Aftertreatment Comes Of Age
by Dr. Michael J. Readey

Last time we discussed some of the engine technologies we’ll see to meet the upcoming Tier 4 regulations.  But as we’ve mentioned before, the regulators are pretty savvy people.  They understand how far one can push engine technologies and the technical capabilities of current diesel catalytic converter systems, otherwise known as “aftertreatment” (meaning emissions are treated “after” combustion).  As a result, many of the regulations are written assuming manufacturers will be using a combination of engine technologies and aftertreatment to meet emissions.  Therefore, in this edition of the Emissions Corner we’ll begin to address aftertreatment technologies, beginning with the simplest – diesel oxidation catalysts.  Let’s get to it.  For more details

Safety Resource Center

Concrete Hazards

Concrete is a mixture of cement, water, aggregates, and often one or more additives. It is used on just about every construction project - footings, caissons, foundations, slabs on grade, walls, curbs and gutters to name just a few. Some safety issues need to be addressed when working with concrete. Fresh cement is highly alkaline (caustic), and can cause skin irritation and burns. You know how uncomfortable it feels if you've ever suffered a concrete burn. This week’s Safety Resource Section is a Tool Box Talk in English and Spanish on Concrete Hazards.

CCA Membership Benefits
Colorado Contractors Association
Partnership With American Express

For those of you that don't know, American Express is the largest provider of corporate business cards in the world and 74% of Fortune 1000 companies are using a corporate card product today.
How can the Corporate Card program be of assistance to my company?
In these economic times, American Express can offer CCA members an interest and fee free unsecured line of credit that does not require any sort of collateral.
The program is corporate liability based, unlike many banking relationships that are usually personal liability based and the Corporate Card program does not require a personal guarantee.  Your account limits will be established on the strength of your financials with most companies getting at least a $50,000 account limit.  The American Express Corporate Card is a charge card and not a credit card, meaning you must pay your balance in full monthly.  Think of this program as American Express lending you money for 60 days at no cost to your company.
What are the advantages to using the Corporate Card?
Besides the interest and fee free line of credit, through the Membership Rewards program you can earn up to 2% back on all of your spend with no limits or expirations.  You’ll also obtain an extra 30 to 59 days of float on your money.  Through the Savings At Work program, which is free to all corporate card clients, you'll get rebates of up to 5% on your spend with FedEx, Budget, Avis, Hilton, Doubletree and Choice Hotels.  We have industry leading reporting which will make managing your books easier for your AP folks.
How do current CCA members, that are Corporate Card clients, utilize their Corporate Card accounts?
They use their program in two ways, the first is to pay their travel and entertainment expenses and the second is for their accounts payable vendor expenses.  It's easy to control and monitor your T&E expenses with our industry leading reporting and internet tools.  We also have different billing types that traditional banks don't offer, which can relieve your company of unwanted liability for your employees that spend out of policy.
Many of your vendors will accept American Express as form of payment and a large majority of your competitors are paying their vendors today with their American Express card.  The advantage for your company is that you can pay your vendors with our money, so you can keep your money in your sweep account and earn more interest on it for an extra 60 days.  Current CCA Corporate Card clients do the majority of their spending on the following 10 monthly expenses:
  • project materials (Ferguson, HD Supply, etc.)
  • workers comp (Pinnacol)
  • fleet maintenance
  • fuel and oil
  • equipment rentals (United, RSC, etc.)
  • telecommunications (office and cellular)
  • office equipment and supplies
  • uniforms
  • employment services
  • sporting tickets.
You have to pay your vendors to run your business, so why not get something back in return.  You don't get rewards for writing checks!
Are there any extra benefits for being a CCA member?
All CCA members will receive free Green Corporate Cards for their first year.
Sounds good, how do I learn more?
Inquire through CCA (Laura Driver) or call your Denver based American Express contact Will Morris direct at (970) 484-9876.
